How to Reduce Brown Spots

Dark spots, or solar lentigenes, are brown patches formed on the skin, especially on the face and hands, after repeated exposure to the sun. In most cases, these brown spots appear after years of exposure, although pregnancy or other hormonal changes (such as taking birth control pills) speeds up the process. While there is no single perfect solution for get rid of brown spots, there's much that can be done to reduce their appearance.

Step 1

Search for creams or serums containing alpha hydroxy acids or retinoids. Both of these ingredients encourage skin regeneration, helping you get rid of dark, sun-damaged skin. For something stronger, ask your doctor about prescription-strength Retin-A, which is normally prescribed for wrinkles or acne but can also clear dark spots.

Step 2

Try your own bleaching process. Bleaching creams containing tretinoin or hydroquinone can be applied to the spots to help them lighten. Or you can try rubbing the juice of a lemon over the spots. Since lemon contains bleaching acids, you might have good results with this simple method.

Step 3

Talk to your doctor about laser therapy, microdermabrasion or chemical peels. These treatments get rid of the top layer of your skin, burning away the dark spots and giving way to younger, wrinkle-free skin. Lase therapy also encourages collagen production. A series of treatments may be needed before significant results can be achieved.

Step 4

Wear face creams or makeup that contain sunscreen. Not only will this prevent further damage, but it will also protect your skin if you're using Retin-A or other acid-based products. These products make the skin more sensitive and more prone to burning, which can in turn lead to more dark pigmentation.
