How to Become a Mother by a Surrogate Father

Women may want to become mothers via a surrogate father for a variety of reasons. According to Penn State Hershey, 15 percent of couples trying to become pregnant for a year are unable and are considered infertile. A woman may be able to produce healthy eggs, but the man may be unable to produce healthy sperm. A surrogate father donates sperm, typically to a sperm bank, and women use fertility clinics in order to gain access to the donor sperm. There are a variety of techniques a fertility clinic may use to impregnate a woman with donor sperm from a surrogate father.

Step 1

Make an appointment with a fertility clinic. Be prepared to answer questions about attempts to become pregnant, including the length of time.

Step 2

Consult with the fertility clinic's staff about the options for selecting sperm donors and becoming pregnant through artificial insemination. Choose the option that works best for you.

Step 3

Go through the fertility clinic's procedure for becoming impregnated. If the procedure is an intrauterine insemination, the process involves injected donor sperm that has been washed directly into the cervix. The timing of the injection is important; it should be performed within six hours of ovulation, according to Fertility Plus.

Step 4

Repeat the procedure as directed by the clinic until successful fertilization is achieved with the surrogate father's sperm. According to The Sperm Bank of California, patients should expect to repeat a fertility procedure four to eight times before pregnancy is achieved.

Step 5

Carry through with the pregnancy until birth and you become a mother of the baby that was conceived through artificial insemination.

Tips and Warnings

  • Talk to others who have been through the process to get an idea about how to deal with emotions that can come up when trying to become pregnant with sperm from a donor. Support groups can help you emotionally through the process.
  • A woman may become frustrated by unsuccessful attempts to become pregnant. Fertility procedures can be expensive. Some fertility procedures can result in multiple births such as twins or triplets.
