4 Ways to Treat Sjogren's Syndrome

1. Drink Up

Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder. It causes dryness in several organs of the body, which can lead to various problems. One of the main symptoms of this disease is a dry mouth. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Chewing gum may also help produce more saliva and ease dry mouth. Specific drugs are available that may be recommended by your doctor to alleviate the problem. Cevimeline may be prescribed. It causes the glands in the mouth to produce more saliva.

2. Combat Dry Eyes

Another symptom of Sjogren's syndrome is dry eyes. To treat dry eyes, use artificial tears or eyedrops. Both can be bought over-the-counter. Prescription drops are also available and may work better for some people. Consider using thick eyedrops; they tend to work better and last longer. However, they can cause blurred vision temporarily. If eyedrops don't help, a procedure can be performed that blocks the opening in the eye that drains the tears away. This helps the tears stay on the surface of the eye longer. Applying warm compresses to the eyes and taking breaks away from the computer and reading may help ease the discomfort of dry eyes.

3. Humidify and Moisturize

Dry skin is often a problem for people with Sjogren's disease. There are several things you can do at home to treat this symptom. Use a humidifier in your home. It will help put moisture in the air and may ease dry skin. Apply a moisturizer to the skin a few times a day. Be aware that long, hot showers and baths can rob moisture from the skin and make it more dry. Keep bathing time brief. Use gentle soaps, which are less drying to the skin. Avoid spending too much time in the sun.

4. Prevent Tooth Decay

Saliva helps wash bacteria out of the mouth. When not enough saliva is produced, it can lead to the buildup of bacteria, which may result in tooth decay. Be diligent about keeping your mouth healthy. Brush and floss your teeth after meals. Talk with your dentist about your condition. Determine if you will need to be checked more frequently for signs of gum disease because of having Sjogren's syndrome. Be aware that people with Sjogren's are also more prone to getting oral yeast infections. Symptoms include a white coating on the surface of your tongue and a burning sensation. Your doctor can prescribe medication to treat this symptom.
