Acne scarring occurs when your skin is damaged by repeated breakouts. Acne pustules and cysts are typically inflamed and infected, which aggravates the skin. As a result, scarring and skin discolorations can remain on the skin long after the acne has cleared. Fortunately, there are ways to lessen the appearance of acne scarring and help the skin discoloration fade more quickly.
Step 1
Loosen the dead and discolored skin by applying oil and steam. Use a noncomedogenic oil, such as olive oil, which won't clog your pores. Pour 1 tsp. of olive oil into your hands, then smooth the oil onto your skin. Use your fingers to massage the oil into the skin deeply, focusing on the areas of your face that are the most affected by acne scarring. After three minutes, lean over a bowl filled with steaming water. Drape a towel over your head to allow the steam to flow over the skin affected by scarring for five minutes. Lift your head from the bowl and wipe away the oil with a wet washcloth. Repeat as need to loosen the scarred skin up to three times per week.
Step 2
Exfoliate the dead and discolored skin by applying a natural facial scrub, such as baking soda. Baking soda is highly alkaline and is composed of smooth, rounded particulates. This allows the baking soda to be mildly abrasive on your skin without causing any irritation or damage. Pour 1 tbsp. of baking soda into a bowl, then mix into it 1 tsp. of water. Spread the baking soda mixture onto your face, massaging it gently. After two to three minutes, rinse with warm water. Repeat as needed up to three times per week.
Step 3
Rebuild new skin cells by applying a toner high in ascorbic acid, which supports the development of new skin cells. Ascorbic acid, also referred to as vitamin C, can be found in high levels in many natural resources, including citrus juices. Lemon juice is particularly high in vitamin C and can be applied directly to your skin without dilution. Soak five cotton pads in concentrated lemon juice, then place the pads on your skin--one for the chin, two for the forehead and one for each cheek. Allow the pads to remain for at least 10 minutes, then remove the pads and let the skin air dry. Repeat as needed up to three times per day.
