The Coppola Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy created a buzz in beauty circles when it was introduced in 2007. The hair treatment created by celebrity stylist Peter Coppola aims to eliminate both curl and frizz. Coppola asserts that the treatment leads to noticeably straighter and softer, has more shine, looks longer and has added life.

Process

The treatment process infuses the hair with keratin, which is a protein found in hair, skin and nails. It is time-intensive, expensive and smelly. The chemical-free treatment acts as an intense conditioner. According to Coppola, the treatment restores and restructures hair by infusing keratin into the hair's cuticle. Heat from a flat iron is used to bond the keratin into the cuticle. This eliminates frizz and reduces drying time. The treatment is also purported to block humidity effects and keep environmental toxins from entering hair.

Effects

The treatment is safe for color treated hair as well as chemically relaxed hair. The treatment, extends life of color, according to Coppola. People who should not use it include women who want no-wave, pin-straight hair, according to Cosmopolitan Online Beauty Editor Andrea Lavinthal, because a person's hair will retain some of its natural body with the keratin treatment, especially in individuals with very curly hair. Pregnant or nursing women are advised to avoid this treatment.

Time Frame

It takes about three hours to undergo the treatment. It is applied and then soaks in under a shower cap for 20 minutes before being sealed in. You must wait 72 hours before washing your hair or using any hair products such as ponytail bands or barrettes, according to Lavinthal. People who want to keep their waviness but cut out frizz can wash their hair after two days instead of three, according to TeenVogue.com.

Frequency

The treatment can be done as often as monthly. Depending on care, the treatment can last for three to five months. Use special shampoos and conditioners from the Coppola Keratin line to extend the results. Re-application is done on the entire head of hair, not just the newly grown portions of hair.

Considerations

Coppola recommends that a you have your hair cut after the Keratin Complex treatment. That's because the hair will lie differently and have a smoother texture than prior to treatment.
