There are many acne treatment methods on the market, many of which do not actually clear your skin completely, as they claim to. There are, however, a few acne treatments that have been tested, and have proven to help clear up acne breakouts on the skin. While not every acne treatment will work for everyone, these treatments have shown that they will work for most.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is an antimicrobial oil that also has antibacterial properties. Tea tree oil is produced by extracting the oil from a tea tree plant, native to Australia and New Zealand. According to the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, tea tree oil is comparable to benzoyl peroxide in its acne-reducing abilities, and is an effective alternative for people who wish to use a more natural acne treatment method that will not cause irritation or inflammation on the skin. Tea tree oil can be found at any health food store, or through an online merchant, and is available in many forms, including as an ointment, salve, concealer and in the pure oil. When using tea tree oil in its pure form, it is recommended that you first dilute it before applying it to your skin. Tea tree oil can be use to treat acne up to five times per day.
Zinc
Zinc is an extremely important mineral in the body, and one of the most essential minerals needed for the proper growth and functioning of the glands and systems, including the skin. According to the University of Maryland, zinc deficiency has been linked to an increase in acne breakouts; conversely, increasing zinc in the body can decrease acne. Zinc can be purchased at any grocery or drug store, and can be taken as a pill, lozenge or powder. You can also increase foods in your diet that contain high levels of zinc, such as shellfish or cheese. As always, check with your doctor before taking any new supplements.
Retinol
Retinol, otherwise known as vitamin A, is one of the body's vital fat-soluble vitamins that helps promote healthy bone and skin development. According to the University of Maryland, applying a topical retinol, called retinoid, to the skin can significantly reduce the severity of acne breakouts. It is important to check with your doctor before using a retinoid cream, which should not be used in large amounts or by women who are pregnant. A doctor or a dermatologist can prescribe the correct dosage for treating your acne.
