Protein Powder Information

Protein powder is the most widely used supplement by amateur and professional athletes, bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts. There are several different types of protein powders available, and the information varies with each brand.

History

Protein supplementation began in the 1930s when Eugene Schiff invented a procedure for separating whey from milk. By the 1950s, meal replacement products were introduced, and they soon were used by bodybuilders for additional nutrition. Since that time, the protein powder business has grown into a multimillion-dollar industry with many different types available for a wide range of consumers.

Types

The most popular types of protein powder are whey and casein. Other types include egg, soy or rice. Many companies are producing a blended protein that combines the advantages of two or more of the proteins.

Identification

Review the nutrition facts and ingredients to identify the type of protein and amount per serving. Protein typically is included in the first ingredients, and most powders contain between 20 and 60 grams per serving. Look for a powder high in protein if you want to add muscle mass.

Benefits

Protein powder most commonly is used to increase muscle size and strength. It also helps to reduce recovery time between workouts by repairing muscles with specific nutrients. Additional benefits include improved skin and immune system health.

Warning

Supplements are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, so be aware of product features and claims. Always use protein powder as a supplement to a balanced nutrition plan.
