Amlodipine (brand name Norvasc) is a commonly prescribed calcium channel blocker for high blood pressure. Amlodipine works by inhibiting calcium ions from entering vascular smooth muscle cells (found in blood vessels), thus vasodilating, or relaxing, the blood vessels. This vasodilation allows for more blood and oxygen to reach the heart, and a healthy supply of blood and oxygen to the heart is critical to maintaining and controlling blood pressure. Amlodipine is taken once daily by mouth as a tablet or disintegrating tablet, and is available by prescription only. Norvasc.com recommends consulting with your health care provider prior to starting or stopping another medication regimen, including other medications for high blood pressure.
