1. Dance School Uniforms?
Nearly every activity or sport has its own exclusive requirements in terms of clothing and gear, and jazz dance is no exception, although its requirements are minimal. Many dance studios require dancers to adhere to a dress code. Your first choice of clothing for jazz dance should match your school's dress code if your dance school has one. Some dress codes also include requirements for how dancers should wear their hair. Otherwise, you'll have several other options to dress for jazz dancing.
2. Back to the Basics
Wear a pair of dance tights and a solid-colored bodysuit. Dance tights come in a variety of colors. If you take ballet classes in addition to jazz classes, then you probably already need pale pink tights for ballet. You can wear this same color for jazz class as well, but you might want to try a neutral shade for jazz class. Avoid wearing shimmery tights to rehearsal. It's much easier for dance instructors to critique when their eyes aren't distracted by bold or shiny colors. Try to wear matte shades and avoid printed bodysuits. Basic black is your best option for bodysuit color.
3. The Ankle and Beyond
You might need to wear ankle-length dance tights if you dance barefoot during jazz class. Some jazz dances require high-heeled character shoes, but often jazz dancers dance in bare feet. The type of shoe is usually determined by the song and the style of the dance. Dancing barefoot helps maintain balance and limits the likelihood you'll fall on a slippery dance floor. If you're going to be performing barefoot, practice that way so your feet are used to the way it feels.
4. Sized Right
Make sure your clothing for jazz class fits properly. Dance tights are usually sized according to height and weight, so pick the right size for you. Make sure your bodysuit also fits properly. Resist the urge to purchase a bodysuit because it's stylish, if it doesn't fit. Ill-fitting dance clothes will distract you during practice. Baggy clothing should be avoided. Baggy pants are a hazard, and it's impossible for a dance teacher to properly critique a student wearing baggy clothing. Opt for close-fitting, but comfortable, clothing.
