The Pros and Cons of Facial Exercises

The pros and cons of facial exercises are reflected in the vast differences of opinion when it comes to the safety and effectiveness of performing them. Facial exercises consist of a series of poses and expressions that are held for certain lengths of time and then repeated. Because of the controversy surrounding facial exercises, before beginning a program you should first research all points of view and consider consulting a dermatologist.

Pro: Strengthening Facial Muscles

Just as the muscles in the body respond to exercise, the muscles in the face are no different. Facial exercises are touted as making a profound difference in your looks. They are designed to tighten and tone your face and neck by strengthening the supportive muscles and, when regularly performed, will prevent double chins, drooping eyelids and wrinkles from forming while also softening current sags and wrinkles.

Con: Facial Exercises Are Unnecessary and Counterproductive

The effectiveness of facial exercises is questioned by Rodney Basler, M.D., a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, who maintains they probably don't work because you can't pump up the tiny facial muscles with exercise. In fact, the exaggerated facial expressions suggested in these exercises are like those connected with strong emotions, which over time can cause changes in the tissues under the skin and lead to sagging and wrinkles, such as crow's feet and laugh lines.

Pro: Fast and Easy Exercises Better Than a Face Lift

The fans of facial exercise say they are easy to perform, and just five to ten minutes per day is all you need to achieve healthier, younger-looking skin. They maintain that if you make it part of your regular routine, you will achieve the benefits of a face-lift without the surgeon's knife.

Con: It's Better to Relax the Overworked Facial Muscles

The real cause of skin wrinkling and aging is due to sun damage, not muscle laxity, according to Fred Fedok, M.D., director of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at Pennsylvania State University. Working on the muscles and not the connective tissue itself will do nothing to improve wrinkles and jowls, says Dr. Fedok. In fact, he suggests toning happens constantly, and he recommends relaxing the facial muscles instead.

Pro: Facial Yoga Improves Tone

Sandra Coulson, an orofacial myologist and founder of the Coulson Institute of Orofacial Myology, has developed a facial yoga program that includes stretching the muscles to get the circulation and blood moving, then strengthening the muscular network of the face, lifting droopy cheeks and sagging jawlines.

Con: Better Results With Nutrition and Products

On the other hand, Coulson states that the main cause of wrinkles is stress and the accumulation of toxins in the skin, from synthetic chemicals in detergents and moisturizers to pollution in the air. She suggests that combining her exercise regimen with proper nutrition and the use of toxic-free facial products will speed up the results.
