Crinone (progesterone) is a medication used as part of a fertility treatment to increase your chances of becoming pregnant. Crinone contains progesterone, a female hormone that is necessary for ovulation (egg release) to take place. It is also needed to prepare your uterine lining to receive a fertilized egg. Crinone can also induce menstruation in non-menopausal women. This medication is a vaginal gel. Apply 90mg of it daily into your vagina or as your doctor prescribes, says the National Library of Medicine.
Common Side Effects
In a study of 61 women taking Crinone, the National Library of Medicine reported that 7 percent developed bloating, 15 percent developed cramps, 8 percent experienced generalized pain and 5 percent developed dizziness. Also, 13 percent experienced a headache, 7 percent developed nausea, 13 percent developed breast pain, 5 percent developed a genital yeast infection, 7 percent experienced vaginal discharge and 5 percent developed generalized pruritus (itching). Call your physician when Crinone's common manifestations remain for more than three days.
Serious Side Effects
The National Library of Medicine indicates that Crinone increases your chances of developing thrombotic (blood clots) disorders. For instance, you can develop cerebrovascular disorders such as a stroke, pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs) and retinal thrombosis (blood clot in your eye's tiny blood vessels). Stroke symptoms include a sudden headache, sudden hemiparalysis (tingling and numbness on one side of your body) and trouble speaking. Drugs.com indicates that Crinone can also cause chest pain that moves to your arm. This is a typical sign of a myocardial infarction (heart attack). Crinone may also cause breast lumps, fevers, chills, nausea, depression and jaundice (yellowing of your skin). Jaundice is an indication of liver problems. Contact your doctor immediately when Crinone causes these side effects.
Additional Concerns
Avoid Crinone if you are hypersensitivity to progesterone or progesterone products. A hypersensitivity response to Crinone includes trouble breathing, hives and swelling of your lips, face and throat. Do not use Crinone if you have a history of undiagnosed vaginal bleeding or liver disease, and if you've had an abortion and any blood clotting disorders.
