Side Effects of Fluconazole

Fluconazole is an antifungal antibiotic used primarily in the treatment of fungal infections. It is taken as an oral tablet and is suitable to treat fungal infections that occur virtually anywhere on your body, including your mouth, throat, genital area and bladder. Fluconazole may also cause unwanted side effects most of which are harmless, some of which are not.

Most Likely Side Effects

Certain side effects of fluconazole are considered less severe as they do not generally pose a health risk to the patient. These side effects include nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, vomiting, indigestion and upset stomach. You may also experience headaches, dizziness, a skin rash and changes in taste that can leave an unpleasant flavor in your mouth.

Side Effects You Should Report

Fluconazole may cause side effects that need to be reported to your doctor as soon as possible. These include an irregular heart beat; flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills or body aches; a skin rash that is blistering or peeling; weakness; bruising or bleeding easily and seizures. Drugs.com recommends reporting these to your doctor immediately as they may be life-threatening.

Possible Liver Damage

Liver damage, another serious side effect of fluconazole, should be reported immediately to your doctor as well. Signs of liver damage a yellowing of the skin and eyes accompanied by urine that is darker than normal and severe upper abdominal pain in the right side. When you have any of these symptoms, the doctor may perform a blood test to look for increased liver enzymes, another indication of liver damage.

Extra Warning

Fluconazole is not recommended for patients who are allergic to drugs that are similar to it, such as clotrimazole, ketoconazole, tioconazole, econazole and sulconazole. Doing so can result in a life-threatening allergic reaction to fluconazole. Signs of an allergic reaction include swelling of the lips, throat, mouth or face; wheezing or difficulty breathing; hives; or a rash accompanied by itching. Emergency medical assistance should be sought immediately if these symptoms begin.
