Program Description
Mindfulness is the practice of living more consciously and in the present moment, without focus on the past or future. By becoming more aware of your surroundings and by eliminating needless sounds and distractions, mindfulness can be heightened, thereby reducing stress and providing relaxation.
Actions
1. Set aside 10 - 15 minutes each day to sit comfortably in a quiet place, focusing on your breathing. Allow any thoughts that enter your mind to simply drift through your consciousness. Any moment at which you become stuck on your thoughts, switch your mental focus to your breathing.
2. Avoid turning on the television or radio for "white noise." You may even wish to experience a full day without any radio or television to learn exactly how much we depend on such noise.
3. Take a daily walk alone without distraction. As you walk, focus on your breath and the feel of your body moving. Notice the sites and smells around you and take your time.
4. Do not eat in front of the television or while reading. Instead, create a pleasant eating atmosphere with candlelight, a lovely place setting or soft music.
5. Keep a mindfulness journal, recording your thoughts and feelings as you partake in your mindful activities. How did it feel to take quiet time for yourself? What did you learn about excessive noise? This will help you explore your progress and will enhance your mindfulness merely by writing - an often meditative practice.
