The best way to increase your metabolism is through exercise, according to Consumer Affairs website. The choice for the type of exercise is only limited by the imagination. Metabolism, or the speed at which your body burns energy (calories) for fuel, depends on your age, your diet and your level of activity. To increase your metabolism quickly, increase the amount and quality of exercise.
Step 1
Walk every day. Walking, not strolling, is a great, low-impact way to increase metabolism, shed pounds and reduce fat. Walking increases lean muscle mass, which provides faster metabolic rates than fat. Try to walk at least 10,000 steps a day, which offers individuals an equivalent of five miles, which helps burn between 2,000 and 3,000 extra calories a week.
Step 2
Engage in high-impact aerobics. Jogging is a way to increase the metabolism, as is any intense high-impact exercise. If you don't want to jog, try a game of tennis or basketball. Join aerobic or kickboxing classes at a gym or challenge your friends to a game of racquetball.
Step 3
Try strength or weight training at least three days a week. Weight training burns calories and increases lean muscle mass (no need to worry about bulking up if you use weights under 20 pounds), which in turn increases metabolism because lean muscle burns calories faster. As you increase the energy necessary to perform weight lifting or weight bearing moves, the higher your metabolism will rise. For example, it will take more energy for you to do a squat or a lunge with 10-pound weights on your shoulders than it would without them, hence the increased calorie burn.
