How to Promote Healthy Feet

Feet are often the overlooked part of the body. They endure pounding and stress all day long but rarely get the personal care provided to your hands. While many people would prefer to ignore their feet and let them fend for themselves, failing to provide proper maintenance to the feet can cause a number of problems, including ingrown toenails, the development of a fungus or blisters.

Step 1

Cut your toenails regularly, and don't follow the curve of the pink at the corners--cut your toenails in a relatively flat line. This will make it tougher for the nail to grow inward, causing pain, swelling and sometimes infection.

Step 2

Wear shoes that fit. Poorly-fitting shoes can make you more susceptible to injuring your foot, such as developing a strained plantar or suffering from recurring blisters.

Step 3

Wash your feet thoroughly every day, making sure to clean between the toes.

Step 4

Apply lotion to skin when it becomes dry and/or cracked.

Step 5

Change your socks every day, and alternate shoes often. Your feet have sweat glands and get hot and moist inside your socks and shoes. Keep your feet fresh with clean socks, and let your shoes air dry after a day of use to minimize their smell.

Step 6

Apply sunscreen to your feet when wearing sandals in the sun.
