How to Speed Up Metabolism Without Using Pills

While there are numerous pills on the market that promise to speed up your metabolism, the truth is that there is no magical solution to weight loss. Natural ways to speed up metabolism are not only healthier but also more effective, as they contain no gimmicky substances and can instead get you to a rate of metabolism that your body can sustain long-term.

Step 1

Follow a weight training program on a regular basis. Muscle speeds up metabolism considerably and you will burn more calories without otherwise changing your workout program and even during periods of rest. To increase muscle definition without gaining bulk, concentrate on a large number of repetitions (12-15) with low weights. A lower number of repetitions using much heavier weights will increase muscle size.

Step 2

Concentrate the main bulk of your diet on protein, which helps build muscle Lean proteins such as chicken, turkey and fish are best and they should be grilled, baked or broiled. Avoid full-fat dairy products, which contain too much cholesterol.

Step 3

Drink green tea, which studies show increased metabolism and help with fat burning. Black tea and coffee can also help, as they stimulate metabolism as well.

Step 4

Don't eat too little. Cutting calories to a number too low will result in your metabolism slowing down as a way to preserve energy. Instead, eat five to six small meals a day and aim for a total daily calorie intake of about 1,200. This will provide enough energy to keep your body working at peak capacity while helping you lose weight as well.

Step 5

Don't skip meals. Breakfast is particularly important, as it sets your blood sugar level for the day. When you spend more than four hours without eating anything, your glucose (blood sugar) plummet, leading to cravings and a sluggish metabolism. To avoid this, eat a balanced breakfast that includes fiber and protein. A good example is cereal with low-fat milk or a piece of fruit with string cheese or yogurt.

Step 6

Spice up your meals. Jalapeño and cayenne peppers are especially useful, as they contain capsaicin, a compound that directly stimulates metabolism for up to several hours after the meal is done. Other hot spices, including spicy mustard, can also have a positive effect. If you'd rather not cook, Mexican and Indian food are particularly rich in capsaicin.
