If your attempts to lose some of that belly fat have been unsuccessful, you might not know that a certain type of fat can actually help you reach your goal. According to a study published by Diabetes Care (see References below), foods rich in monounsaturated fatty acid (also known as MUFA) can actually help slim down your abdomen. Your belly will thank you when you exercise regularly and eat a well-balanced diet that includes MUFA-rich foods.

Olive Oil

Olive oil not only is rich in MUFA, but it also is known to lower harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Olive oil is also full of antioxidants, which are known to help lower your chances of developing diseases such as cancer. Prepare your food in extra-virgin olive oil or combine with vinegar to add flavor to your salads.

Seeds and Nuts

Treats such as almonds and walnuts contain high amounts of MUFA. Almonds are particularly a good source of fiber and vegetable protein, and walnuts are full of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Both almonds and walnuts are high in calories, but they don't need to be eaten in large quantities to reap the benefits. Use them as toppings for cereal, salads and yogurt, or grab a handful for a quick snack.

Avocados

Avocados are delicious, versatile and nutritious. They do contain fat, but that shouldn't deter anyone from enjoying them. Like olive oil, almonds and walnuts, avocados are rich in MUFA. They are also high in folate and potassium. Slice some avocado and enjoy it in a sandwich, salad, salsa or as a cracker spread.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate has some health benefits, but there are some caveats. The cocoa powder in dark chocolate contains MUFA and antioxidants, but some chocolate products contain other fat that cancels out the healthy qualities of the treat. Stay away from treats that contain less desirable ingredients, such as milk fat and partially hydrogenated oils. Dip some fresh strawberries in melted dark chocolate for a delectable and healthy dessert.

Flaxseed Oil

Most flaxseed oil is low in saturated fat, but contains a beneficial amount of healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. In addition, flaxseed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and it is known to help reduce the inflammation that could contribute to diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. Flaxseed oil can be added to salad dressings, soups and smoothies. The oil will be damaged, however, if it is exposed to direct heat, so do not cook with it.
