How to Eat After Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery is indicated for the treatment of morbidly obese individuals who cannot lose weight through proper exercise and diet alone. The surgery reduces the size of the stomach, which forces food to bypass part of the small intestine. This surgery makes weight loss faster. After the surgery you will be able to feel full by eating less food. Eating properly will help you achieve faster weight loss after gastric bypass surgery.

Step 1

Slowdown and take your time when consuming your food. Drinking or eating too fast may cause the contents of your stomach to empty too quickly into your small intestine (dumping syndrome). This can cause dizziness, diarrhea, sweating and vomiting. To prevent dumping syndrome, always drink and eat slowly, and wait at least one hour before or after each meal to drink fluids.

Step 2

Chew your food completely so that it is mashed into smaller pieces. There is an opening between the stomach and intestine, which is naturally small to begin with. Larger pieces going into this opening can block it, and this can prevent food from leaving your stomach thereby causing vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain. Chewing your food thoroughly will decrease the foods size when swallowed and allow it to pass through the small opening.

Step 3

Consume fluids high in protein a few days after your gastric surgery. Drinks such as soy milk and Ensure High Protein can help heal your surgical wounds and provide your body with necessary protein to help regrow muscles, skin and hair. You can move on to solid protein foods such as tofu and spinach a few weeks after your surgery or as instructed by your surgeon.

Step 4

Avoid foods which are high in in sugars and saturated fats. These kinds of unhealthy food will make it difficult for your digestive system to tolerate after surgery. Also avoid soda, dairy products and deep fried foods.

Step 5

Avoid drinking liquid with your meals. Drinking fluids together with your meals can cause nausea, pain and vomiting. Wait at least an hour after or before meals when drinking water or other fluids. In addition, avoid drinking too much fluid around mealtime. This can make you feel too full and prevent you from consuming foods that are rich in nutrients. Do drink eight glasses of water throughout the day to prevent becoming dehydrated.
