Your self-esteem is the way you perceive yourself, and it is something that develops throughout your childhood and into your adult life. Low self-esteem can affect every aspect of your life, from family life to work life and, most importantly, your health. It can influence your friendships and family life, lead to underachieving academically or at work, and can cause you to feel lonely and anxious. By trying to increase your self-esteem, you will become a more confident and happier version of yourself.
Step 1
Make a list of your talents. These can be artistic talents like painting, dancing or playing a musical instrument, or they may be other things that you are good at such as cooking, being organized or decorating. Actually writing these things down will make you see how many skills you have and what a wonderfully talented person you are.
Step 2
List the things you have improved in yourself, or that have improved in your life in the last five years. This may include your relationships, a promotion at work or something else that you have become better at. Next think of ways of improving them further in the next five years. This will allow you to better yourself, and you will only be competing against yourself and no one else.
Step 3
Don't associate yourself with negative people. You may encounter people who are dominating and manipulative and who may make you feel worse about yourself or cause you to self-doubt. Avoid these people and surround yourself with friends and family who like you for who you are and who will provide you with support instead of criticism.
Step 4
Participate in a hobby. If there's a hobby that you always wanted to take up, start now. Hobbies are a great way of channeling negative energy into something that will bring a positive outcome and sense of achievement. The success will make you more confident in trying something more challenging.
Step 5
Help others. Volunteer at a homeless or an animal shelter or perhaps become a big brother or sister. If you have elderly family members or neighbors, ask them if they need help around the house or with shopping or gardening. Knowing that you did something to make someone else feel better will also help you feel better about yourself.
Step 6
Compliment and treat yourself. Every night before you go to bed, think of three things that made you feel good about yourself during the day, even small things. When you have achieved a personal goal, take time out to enjoy your achievement and believe that you will make further accomplishments.
Step 7
Accept things that you can't change and have no control over, like your looks or skin color. Accept these things and tell yourself it's what makes you unique.
Step 8
Make time for self-care. Get plenty of sleep, enjoy healthy balanced meals, and exercise.
