1. Reach for the Milk Thistle
All chemicals we ingest, smoke or are exposed to in other ways -- including alcohol, pharmaceuticals and other toxic compounds -- must be broken down by the liver for elimination from the body. Milk Thistle supports and enhances liver function and the detoxification from these toxic drugs -- legal and illegal.
Milk Thistle acts as an antioxidant to protect liver cells from damage and also protects and stimulates production of the liver's own natural antioxidants. Milk Thistle has even been shown to actually help regenerate liver cells that have already been damaged by alcohol and other chemicals, making it one of the most powerful herbal remedies for detoxification. Consume 140 mg of Milk Thistle's main active compound -- silymarin -- three times daily for general liver support. Increase this amount to 210 mg three times daily when you are faced with additional toxin exposure or want extra protective and reparative benefits for your hard-working liver.
2. Supplement With Phosphatidylcholine
Phosphatidylcholine is a major component of cell membranes, and is found in extremely high levels in liver cell membranes, since this is where most of the liver's detoxification processes occur. Phosphatidylcholine acts as an antioxidant to protect liver cells from damage from alcohol and other chemicals, supporting the body's natural detoxification processes of these compounds. Phosphatidylcholine also stimulates liver enzymes to enhance the detoxification process, and helps to repair liver damage. Supplement with 400 to 800 mg phosphatidylcholine two to three times daily to protect the liver and boost its detoxification abilities.
3. Cook With Turmeric
Turmeric is a spice well-known in Indian cooking. But this bright yellow-orange spice does more than add flavor to food. Turmeric contains a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant -- Curcumin -- that protects the liver from oxidative damage while also stopping the damaging inflammation that can occur from overexposure to alcohol and other drugs. For general liver and detoxification support sprinkle Turmeric on your food or add it to stews, soups, salad dressings or even smoothies. For additional detoxification support, consume a supplement containing 200 mg of Curcumin one to two times daily.
4. Take a Daily Multivitamin
Alcohol and other such legal and illegal drugs can impair your body's absorption of nutrients from the food you eat, so it is essential to supplement with a daily multivitamin. In addition, food choices when consuming or exposed to these compounds are often inadequate to provide proper nutrient levels for general health, much less provide the additional nutrients that the liver needs to break down and eliminate these compounds and their often more toxic byproducts from the body. Consume a high-potency multivitamin-mineral supplement in capsule form since capsules are easier for the body to break down than hard tablets and the nutrients are more readily available for absorption. Consume the daily recommended dose of the product over the course of the day, instead of all at once, to spread your nutrient intake out and provide a more continual stream of nutrients for your body.
