How to Make Your Own Archery Target

Archery is a great sport, whether you're a hunter who goes bow hunting during elk season or you're competing in the Olympics. Practice makes perfect and to practice you need a target. You can save time and money by making your own. Certain homemade targets may work better with some arrowheads than others.

Step 1

Fill an old grain or burlap sack--or a plastic tarp sewed into a square--with quilt batting or strips of old clothing or plastic bags. Pack it tightly to create the shape you want. You can also fill a cardboard box with the same materials and secure it with packing tape. Draw a specific target or targets on the sack, tarp or box and hang it from a tree or attach it to a solid frame. Practice tips are easier to remove from these targets than broad head arrows.

Step 2

Stack two hay bales on top of each other in your yard. Cut your targets out of cardboard. Make them different sizes and shade them in different colors with crayons, markers or spray paint. A hay bale target with cardboard is okay to use with both practice and broad head arrows.

Step 3

Buy blocks of Styrofoam and glue or tie them together into the target size you want. Place several layers of cardboard behind the Styrofoam to stop faster arrows. Use cardboard scraps and paint or draw a heart for a target. Place the heart in different locations on the Styrofoam to practice your aim.
