Ketogenic diets have become extremely popular over the last few years. The principle behind them is quite simple. They are loosely defined as high fat, adequate protein, low carbohydrate diets, but primarily focus on restricting carbohydrates. Limiting carbs causes insulin levels drop, and in response the body starts a process called ketogenesis where it is forced to burn fat instead of glucose. Ketogenic diets have stirred up some controversy in the past, but according to an October 2009 study published in "Current Diabetes Reports," research suggests that low-carbohydrate diets can be a viable option for achieving weight loss.
Step 1
Consult your physician. You should never attempt to radically change your diet without first talking to your doctor. Ketogenic diets should always be medically supervised and monitored.
Step 2
Ask yourself if this method of weight loss is really the best one for you. Figure out if it suits your lifestyle; whether you're willing to skip staples like bread, pasta and potatoes; whether you have the discipline to stick with the program; and whether you can afford it.
Step 3
Assess how much money you want to spend and begin researching the various programs available. Your doctor may recommend a particular regimen, or you may want to look a one of the many commercial plans available. Among the better known are the Atkins, Zone, South Beach and Protein Power diets.
Step 4
Chose a diet and become an informed consumer. Understand the science behind a ketogenic diet and how it will affect your body. Once you've chosen a plan, study it carefully. Get to know its objectives, what's expected of you and the realistic outcome.
Step 5
Don't be afraid to ask questions. Talk to your doctor, or if you have signed up with one of the commercial plans, contact its customer support representatives. They will usually respond within 12 hours on business days.
