How to Stick to a Diet Plan

Being on a diet is hard work, but staying on a diet is even harder. Most individuals go on a diet for a specified period of time, knowing that the diet will not last forever. The Mayo Clinic suggests looking at a diet as a permanent way to change your eating habits rather than a quick fix. The best diet is one that you can maintain, not one that prevents you from eating any of your favorite foods.

Step 1

Bulk up your meals with fruits and veggies. Instead of eating a meal that leaves you wanting more, add foods with high water content, including carrots, broccoli and celery, to turn your meal into a feast.

Step 2

Fill your stomach with high-fiber, whole-grain snacks. Snacks, including a slice of whole-grain toast or oatmeal, can keep your blood sugar stable and prevent you from giving in and snacking on chips or ice cream.

Step 3

Be smart when choosing what to eat at restaurants. If you must eat fast food, get a grilled chicken sandwich and stay away from sodas and combo meals that come with French fries and a sugary drink. Avoid putting mayonnaise or dressing on your food and stick with small portions when possible. Although eating at a fast-food restaurant might seem counterproductive, it is important to respond to your cravings in moderation so you don't binge or quit the diet altogether.

Step 4

Keep healthy food in the house. If you have veggies, fruit, lean proteins like lean turkey slices and yogurt, and whole grains in the fridge, you're less likely to run out and splurge on a doughnut or a burger.

Step 5

Don't starve yourself. Forget the conception that diets are restrictive and that eating less is the only way to lose weight. Instead, eat wisely and in moderation. If you skip meals, you will eventually give in to bad food choices, which will cause you to regain the weight you lost. Make healthy choices every day to lose weight quickly and effectively.
