1. Those Vital Vegetables
Vegetables play an important role in our everyday diet and overall health. Vegetables provide us with many of the nutrients that help keep us healthy, like vitamin D, K, iron, and fiber. Most vegetables require some cleaning and preparation, but after they've been prepped, there's no end to the possibilities for cooking and serving them. Root vegetables are a great source of fiber, but most of them need to be peeled first for the best presentation. There are some quick and easy ways to peel root vegetables like carrots and parsnips and make them healthy and delicious. Peel root vegetables to remove dirt and skins and reveal the tasty vegetables inside.
2. Find The Right Tool For The Job
The key to peeling root vegetables quickly and safely is a good quality vegetable peeler. Buy a vegetable peeler with a comfortable handle that has textured grips so it doesn't slide around in your hand when you peel multiple vegetables. Your vegetable peeler should have stainless-steel blade that is easy to clean and be shaped so that it is capable of peeling round or oddly shaped vegetables like ginger root. Some peelers even come with a serrated side to the blade so that you can grate vegetables with the same tool you used to peel them. Don't use a knife to peel root vegetables. If you use a knife, you could cut yourself; kitchen knives also cut deeper into the vegetable, removing an edible portion of the vegetable along with the peel.
3. End-To-End Preparation
Trim ends of root vegetables and any stems or leaves before you peel them. This will prevent long, leafy stems on vegetables like carrots and radishes from getting in your way. Trimming beforehand also makes peeling vegetables more efficient. Instead of peeling ends that you will be trimming and discarding before cooking the vegetables anyway, you will only be peeling the part of the vegetable you're using. When trimming larger root vegetables like radishes or parsnips, cut the ends off and lay the vegetable cut side down on its larger end; use the cut end as a base for more stability as you peel around the vegetable.
4. Find a Flat Surface
Peel root vegetables on a cutting board or a clean, flat countertop for safety. Peeling root vegetables on a clean, flat surface like a cutting board gives you more stability and leverage with the vegetable peeler. It also reduces the risk of you dropping the vegetable or accidentally cutting your hand with any sharp edges of the vegetable peeler.
