How to Shop for SPF Makeup

If you wear makeup every day, consider purchasing makeup with sunscreen built in to provide extra sun protection to your face. SPF, or sun protection factor, determines how much protection your product doles out. An SPF of 30 blocks out 97 percent of harmful UVB rays by scattering the light before the harmful rays can be absorbed into your skin. Purchase an SPF makeup you can trust to avoid wrinkles, skin cancer, sun spots and other harmful effects of the sun on your skin.

Step 1

Determine the type of makeup you would like to purchase. SPF protection is available in powder makeups, liquid makeups and mineral makeups. Liquid makeups work best for normal skin, powder makeups work well on oily skin or as a finishing powder over concealer. Mineral makeups can be used on any skin type, including combination skin.

Step 2

Purchase products developed specifically for sun protection. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration controls the regulation of skin products containing SPF, so if the makeup says it contains 30 SPF, it really does. Anti-aging products are not regulated by the FDA in this way, and do not contain SPF unless specified on the label.

Step 3

Look for ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide work to deflect the sun's rays to prevent sun damage.

Step 4

Search for an oil-free, noncomedogenic makeup. Makeups that contain oil can clog pores and feel heavy on the skin. Noncomedogenic makeup does not block the pores, which may prevent acne and provide a clearer complexion in some individuals.

Step 5

Dab the makeup on the underside of your wrist to determine how well it blends with your skin tone. If you have adequately protected your face from sun damage, your complexion should be similar to the skin on your wrist. Continue dabbing makeup shades on your wrist until you have found the one that matches your skin tone.

Tips and Warnings

  • Purchase makeup with a return policy when possible.
  • Don't rely on your makeup alone for sun protection--use a sunscreen lotion under your makeup for the best protection.
