Introduction
According to the 2009 Center for Disease Control Statistics, more than 72 million people in the United States, or about one-third of the adult population, could be considered obese. To help combat this problem, weight loss programs and diet pills from all sides of the medical and alternative health community have been invented. Two of the most popular options on the market are the weight loss program Weight Watchers, and the diet pill Alli. Although both have proven success on their own, when used together, the level of success and weight loss can be increased.
Weight Watchers
Weight Watchers is a holistic approach to weight loss. The program focuses on four main points, eating smarter, moving more, creating good habits and using a support system. Weight Watchers offers their members not only a diet plan, but also creates an atmosphere of accountability and support through Weight Watchers meetings, which can be found in hundreds of cities across America. Weight watchers works by decreasing the overall amount of calories you consume on a daily basis, and increasing your exercise levels, which creates a calorie deficit in your body. The body then turns to fat storages to create the energy it needs, allowing you to lose weight in the process.
Alli
For many years the prescription weight loss drug Xenical has been on the market. After FDA approval, a less potent form of the prescription was introduced to the market called Alli. Alli works by blocking the absorption of a portion of the fat you consume, allowing it to continue through the digestive system and exit the body in your feces. By absorbing less fat, the body stores less fat on the body. Alli comes with uncomfortable side effects if not used correctly. These are referred to by the Alli website as "treatment effects." Treatment effects of Alli can include loose and oily stool, as well as loss of bowel control. These effects only occur when the recommended levels of fat consumption is exceeded.
Working Together
Because Weight Watchers gives simple tools to keep track of calorie intake, and high calorie foods are often higher in fat, Weight Watchers can not only help increase the amount of weight loss while using Alli, it can also help keep the fat content under control enough to prevent issues with treatment effects. Alli also can help keep you on track with sticking to your Weight Watchers diet. It does so by using the negative reinforcement of treatment effects to keep you vigilant with controlling the calories and fat you consume. By using both programs, you decrease the amount of fat your body absorbs, reduce your overall calorie intake, and increase your fitness level. These are all healthy habits that lead to lasting weight loss.
