Hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, can cause complications in a patient with diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, this condition can occur when there is too little insulin in the body or when the stops using insulin properly. Symptoms of hyperglycemia include frequent urination, high levels of thirst, an elevated blood glucose level and increased levels of sugar in the urine. If hyperglycemia is left untreated, it can lead to a serious condition known as ketoacidosis, or diabetic coma.
Control Your Blood Glucose Level
Step 1
Exercise. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) states that regular exercise is key to avoiding high blood glucose levels. Develop a fitness plan and be sure to stick to it.
Step 2
Avoid stress. Be it from personal conflicts or an illness, stress can increase your blood sugar levels. To keep them within a healthy range, avoid stressful situations as much as possible
Step 3
Eat the right foods. According to the Mayo Clinic, eating incorrectly can cause a spike in your blood sugar level. You should avoid sugary beverages and keep your portions small.
Step 4
Drink lots of water. The Joslin Diabetes Center, which is affiliated with Harvard Medical School, recommends a minimum of eight glasses a day.
Step 5
Use your medications properly. A doctor may prescribe medications that help keep your blood sugar under control. The Mayo Clinic points out that you should strictly follow the dosage instructions so that your blood glucose stays in normal ranges throughout the day.
Tips and Warnings
- Work with a doctor or dietitian to decide on the best combination of diet and exercise for you. By frequently checking in with them, you'll increase the chances that you'll follow the plan.
- Before you exercise, check your urine for ketones. Testing kits, like Ketostix, can be purchased at the pharmacy for home use. These are usually available without a prescription. According to The Mayo Clinic, excessive levels of these toxic acids indicate that physical activity can further increase your already elevated blood sugar levels.
