The foods you consume have a direct effect on your health. When you have a special condition or are of a certain age, the foods that you should avoid consuming change. Those who suffer from diabetes, are pregnant, are younger or are eating in order to lose weight need to think carefully about the food that they put into their bodies, and avoid food that could potentially hurt their respective conditions.
When Losing Weight
There are obviously a number of foods that you'll want to avoid consuming when weight loss is your goal, but some of the worst foods that you can eat while trying to lose weight are those that are high in saturated fats. That includes meats, snacks like chips and fatty fast food .According to the website Heart-Healthy.org, these saturated fats are hard for your body to metabolize, so they become stored fats on your body. Instead, choose healthy fruits and vegetables to make up the bulk of your diet when looking to lose weight.
While Pregnant
When you're pregnant, you might have cravings for just about any type of food. While fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids, you should limit your intake. Some fish that are high in mercury, like shark and swordfish should be avoided completely while pregnant, and raw fish like sushi should also be avoided due to safe handling and cooking practices. If you crave fish, stick to low mercury fish like salmon and trout, says the American Pregnancy Association.
With Diabetes
Diabetics are used to following strict dietary requirements due to their condition. Any food high in carbohydrates will cause the blood sugar to spike, which is unsafe to a diabetic. But those carbohydrates can lurk in places you don't expect, such as foods that are high in refined flour. Refined flour not only is void of nutrients, but can spike blood sugar. Look out for refined flour in many breads and convenience foods and avoid it.
For Heart Health
If your doctor has told you to watch your LDL cholesterol levels to keep your heart healthy, it's a good time to cut harmful foods out of your diet altogether. Foods that have been fried are especially harmful for your cholesterol levels, as they often contain over your daily recommended allowance of cholesterol in one small serving. Red meats should be avoided when possible, and switched for lean protein sources like chicken, pork and fish. Packaged processed foods are also high in cholesterol and should be avoided for better heart health.
For Children
You should remember that when you're avoiding food because of high cholesterol, sugar or oil content, kids foods should also be closely examined for nutritional value. Those devoid of value, such as sugary fruit snacks and convenience foods, should be avoided. Time Magazine warns against children's foods that have too much sodium or fat, setting your child up for a lifelong battle with weight and health. Look for healthier alternatives instead.
