Vitamin D is an important vitamin in the human body. It has the responsibility of maintaining normal blood levels of phosphorous and calcium by regulating the movement of those minerals into the bones. Deficiency of vitamin D has numerous health effects but can be offset by following some specific dosage instructions.
RDA Dosage For Adults
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for adults ages 14 to 50 years old is approximately 200IU per day. The RDA for adults ages 51 to 70 is 400IU per day.
RDA Dosage For Children
The RDA for infants and children up to 14 years old is 200IU per day.
Therapeutic Dosage
Therapeutic dosage of vitamin D for children and adults is 1,000IU to 2,000IU per day.
IU
IU is defined as International Unit. One IU equals approximately .66 mg.
Overdose
Vitamin D is well regulated by the body, and large doses of 50,000IU over several months might cause toxicity or overdose. Toxicity symptoms are caused by high blood calcium. They include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, weakness, itching of the skin and eventual kidney failure.
