MyPyramid, based on the United States Department of Agriculture's 2005 dietary guidelines, includes specific recommendations for children ages 6 to 11 years old. The suggestions are based on an 1,800 calorie diet, and ensure balanced and nutrient-dense diets for children.

Grains

MyPyramid recommends children consume 6 oz. of grains on a daily basis. Whole grains such as whole-wheat and popcorn should account for at least half of a child's daily intake of grains.

Vegetables

MyPyramid encourages children to pick among green and orange vegetables when fulfilling the daily vegetable requirement of 2 1/2 cups. Other vegetables include green peppers, onions, carrots, mushrooms and green beans.

Fruits

Children should consume 1 1/2 cups of fruit on a daily basis. MyPyramid encourages children to opt for whole fruits such as strawberries and blueberries over fruit juices.

Milk

MyPyramid recommends children consume 3 cups of milk products on a daily basis. When possible, choose low-fat options; go for the low-fat milk instead of whole milk. Other milk products include cheese and yogurt.

Meats and Beans

Make sure your child's diet fulfills his protein needs; he should consume 5 oz. of low-fat meat, fish, nuts, beans or peas on a daily basis.
