Many men struggle with slowing metabolism, particularly with age. Even for those who slave away in the gym, the efficiency of their metabolic process can easily undo the work they put into maintaining a lean body. Often this is because men assume exercise and willpower can trump the imminent fate of weight gain and slowing metabolism. The bad news is, no amount of morning runs and weight room sessions can maintain an ideal metabolism. The good news is, much of the solution rests in your diet.
Step 1
Eat breakfast. Your metabolism is at its best when you eat a meal within 45 minutes of waking up. Getting your proteins and grains at this time is usually a good bet--that's why eggs and toast are such popular breakfast staples.
Step 2
Eat five or six smaller meals throughout the day, rather than three big meals. You want to keep your body metabolizing throughout the day. Providing it a consistent stream of food, rather than forcing it to stop and start for three big meals, will lend itself to stability and a much-improved metabolism.
Step 3
Embrace protein. Eating a high-protein diet can help you shed pounds in the long run. Part of the reason is because protein is so complex, requiring more energy to break down than most other foods.
Step 4
Exercise three to five times a week, if not daily. These workouts should last at least 20-30 minutes each. Afterward, try to ingest protein within 15 minutes of working out, or as soon as possible. This will let your body break down your food in time to use it when building back muscle, creating a leaner body and a faster metabolism.
Step 5
Try spicy foods. They're not for everyone, but spices such as cinnamon and cayenne pepper can jump-start your metabolism.
