1. Is It Dried Out or Tainted Bread?
Bread is one of those food items that we love when it's fresh and warm. However, it doesn't stay that way too long. A loaf of bread left open will dry out and go stale. This bread can still be used for stuffing or in soups within a day or two. Tainted bread is another story. Sometimes a loaf of bread is a little undercooked, so there's too much moisture from the center of the loaf. This causes the bread to spoil quickly, become tainted and not safe to eat. It might smell a little odd when you open the package, so that's a clue there's something not quite right with the bread. It can also happen when a warm moist loaf of bread in sealed in plastic too soon, causing the bread to become spoiled. Your only option is to throw it out.
2. Don't Eat Green Furry Bread
Everyone has run across the problem of molding bread. When you open the package, you get a whiff of an unpleasant smell, certainly not what fresh bread should smell like. Examining the bread, you'll see green furry looking mold or even white fuzzy mold. It's not ok to cut the mold off a loaf of bread, or any other food item prepared with yeast or even wheat, and eat it. Once the bread has become tainted or spoiled, the bread is unsafe to eat and should be thrown away. Whatever it looks like, don't eat molded bread--toss it.
3. Sniff the Fruit Breads Before You Take a Bite
Homemade loaf breads with fruit in them such as banana bread or blueberry bread have very thick dense batter with yeast and eggs that sometimes doesn't cook all the way to the center of the loaf. Be careful when eating these breads to make sure that it was thoroughly cooked. If not, these will turn or ferment too much, making these unsafe to eat. It's a good idea to take a quick sniff of these breads if they have been sitting out wrapped in plastic. If it has a rather strong sour smell, throw it out.
4. Help Children Identify Tainted Bread
Young children need help in identifying spoiled bread or any tainted foods. As they don't understand that it will make them sick, it's up to the parent or caregiver to monitor all the food a young child eats. Also, do not feed tainted or spoiled bread to animals, as it will make them sick as well.
