The Best Way to Colon Cleanse

The colon is about five feet in length and is the part of the digestive system that is referred to as the "large intestine." When food passes into the colon, water and mineral salts are extracted for use by the body. The remaining waste matter then exits the body as feces. Over the course of time, the colon can become impacted with fecal matter, mucoid plaque and undigested food. This can cause malabsorption of nutrients, and you may suffer symptoms like fatigue and weight gain. To help unblock this impaction, you can do a colon cleanse. The best way to do so is by following some key steps that revolve around your eating habits.

Step 1

Stop eating foods that can promote impaction. Foods that are high in saturated fat, sugar and sodium are hard to digest, and they are also low in fiber. Avoid fast foods, deep fried foods, dairy products, cakes, cookies, chips, candy, commercial baked goods and processed meats.

Step 2

Eat high fiber foods. Fiber comes in the forms of soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber gets absorbed in water while insoluble fiber does not. When it comes to your colon, a low-fiber diet is one of the main reasons for impaction to occur. The best way to reverse this problem is to increase your fiber intake. According to the Mayo Clinic, women should get 21-25 grams of fiber a day and men should get 30-38 grams. Foods that are high in fiber include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans.

Step 3

Drink water to help absorption. Avoid sugary, high-calorie beverages like soda, processed fruit drinks, milk shakes, coffee drinks and alcohol. Drink water instead as it helps flush toxins from your system and also helps bind with fiber to push waste matter through your colon.

Step 4

Eat well. If you are going to eat meat and fish, make sure it is in small amounts. For all of your food choices, keep them organic and free of chemicals, pesticides and hormones.

Step 5

Take herbal supplements for extra support. Herbal supplements can be used to help promote bowel movements, they can kill parasites, and they can also keep your colon in better working order once you are done cleansing. Examples include cascara sagrada, rhubarb, psyllium, senna and slippery elm.

Step 6

Get a colonic. Colonic irrigation, also known as "colon hydrotherapy," is a type of high-powered enema. In this procedure, a specialist inserts a speculum into your rectum with a hose attached. Warm, mineral-enriched water is then flushed into your colon, and backed up waste matter is then broken up. The water pressure is then reversed and the waste matter is evacuated from your body.
