Symptoms of depression in men differ slightly from women. The symptoms can be missed because men may not talk openly about their feelings. Typically, men are reluctant to discuss feelings of sadness, lack of energy or other signs that underlie mood disorders. Depression can affect anyone. Symptoms vary between individuals. Three types of depression are recognized - major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and manic-depressive or bipolar disorder.
Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Symptoms of depression in men might be found if there is an alcohol or drug abuse problem, thought to be a coping mechanism. Rather than admitting to feelings of sadness, irritability, frustration or anger, men might turn to drugs or alcohol when they feel depressed.
Excessive Work or Sports
Men with depression might spend long hours at work. Workaholics may be trying to hide depression symptoms from family and friends. Work and becoming overly involved in sports can be a way for men to deal with symptoms of depression. Men may try to cope by shutting others out of their lives, seeking a variety of other activities to help deal with depression. Men are more likely than women to commit suicide.
Risk Taking
Risk taking can be a symptom of depression in men. Reckless driving, gambling and risky sexual relationships outside of marriage could be signs of male depression. Changes in personality can be a valuable clue that signals depression in men. Some men will show less interest in sex when they are depressed.
Physical Symptoms
Rather than discussing feelings of sorrow, fatigue, anger or irritability, men are more likely to describe physical symptoms to their family or physicians that indicate underlying depression. Physical symptoms include loss of appetite, loss of sex drive, insomnia, fatigue, and vague physical complaints and discomfort. Other physical complaints include inability to concentrate, listlessness, and loss of interest in hobbies and leisure activities. Pain can become worse or chronic. Headaches that persist and digestive disorders could be symptoms of depression in men. Recognizing symptoms of depression in men is important in order to know when to seek treatment and help.
