What Does a High HDL Level Mean?

HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein and is often referred to as the good cholesterol. Cholesterol is a waxy substance, found in all cells, and is carried through the bloodstream by lipoproteins.

Function

High-density lipoproteins carry excess cholesterol in your blood to the liver for disposal.

Protection

High-density lipoproteins help to protect against heart disease by carrying away the bad cholesterol that causes plaque buildup in the arteries.

Testing

Blood tests are used to determine the levels of cholesterol. However, there are side effects for some individuals when they get blood drawn--fainting, lightheadedness and excessive bleeding.

Average HDL Levels

According to the American Heart Association, men typically have an HDL average of 40 to 50 mg/dL, and women typically have an HDL average of 50 to 60 mg/dL.

Higher HDL Levels

HDL cholesterol levels higher than 60 mg/dL increase the chances of protecting against heart disease, according to the American Heart Association.
