European Elder for Sinus Infections and Pain
European elder is a tree grown in Europe, the Unites States, Asia and Africa. Several types of elder exist, though European elder is most often used in supplements and for medicinal purposes. Pain, including neck pain and sinus infections, may be helped with elderberry or other parts of the European elder. In addition, swelling, skin conditions, infections, flu, cold, constipation and fevers are treated with teas, liquid extracts and capsules containing the herb. While the herb is proven to aid sinus infections in conjunction with antibiotics and other herbs, scientific evidence is mixed regarding the results, according to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM).
Ginger for Pain and Colds
Ginger is a widely used herb derived from a tropical flowering plant. In Asian medicine, it is used to treat stomach ailments. In the Unites States, the herb is used in supplements that treat nausea and cold and flu symptoms. In addition, arthritis and other pain-related conditions are treated with ginger, making it a possible remedy for neck pain. Dried root, teas, tablets and liquid extract forms of ginger are available in grocery stores and health food stores.
Echinacea for Sinus Relief
While Echinacea may not treat pain, particularly of the neck, it is a powerful herb used to increase immune system function and to fend off illness. It is found in teas, extracts and topical preparations. It is used to both prevent bacterial infections that result in colds, sinus infections and other illness and can also treat existing infections. According to the NCCAM, some studies show that Echinacea is beneficial for treating upper respiratory infections, while others show no results in treating colds or flu symptoms.
