Concerta, methylphenidate HCL, is a prescription extended-release medication used to treat ADHD, per RxList.com. It works by stimulating the central nervous system, preventing an individual from losing focus or being easily distracted. It should be taken precisely as prescribed including how much, how often and how long the medication is to be taken because it can be habit-forming, per the Mayo Clinic. It is a time-released medication and may require several days to weeks of use before the effects can be seen. There is the risk of overdose when the product is not taken properly.
Physical Symptoms of Overdose
The Mayo Clinic points out some of the common signs of overdose include convulsions, dryness of the mouth or mucus membranes, irregular heart beat, fever, flushing, severe headache, increased sweating, large pupils, muscle twitching, overactive reflexes, sweating, trembling or vomiting. These symptoms require immediate medical attention. The Mayo Clinic points out that methylphenidate may cause sleeplessness, dizziness, drowsiness or changes in vision. These side effects can be intensified with an overdose, but at a standard dose these side effects are considered normal.
Psychological Implications of Overdose
In addition to physical symptoms of overdose an individual may experience psychological changes such as: agitation, severe confusion and hallucinations, per the Mayo Clinic. Individuals may even act out in anger or a rage from their irritation.

RxList.com points out that in addition to these symptoms being a sign of overdose they can also be the result of a drug interaction. Other side effects that may be associated with an overdose or with a drug interaction include: chest pain, shortness of breath or a loss of consciousness.
