How to Get Free Birth Control Pills

A woman needs a prescription to acquire birth control pills. Many health services provide the exam, prescription and birth control pill for a reduced price, or even for free. Some health care programs, such as Medicaid, also may provide these services for free or for a small charge. Local resources are the best places to start. Some national organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, have offices that provide free or income-based services.

Step 1

Search online for local health services that provide free birth control pills. Visit PlannedParenthood.org or CDC.gov to locate local resources.

Step 2

Use the phone book to locate centers in your area. Headings to look under include: pregnancy center, women's center, family planning facility.

Step 3

Call the health centers and ask about their fees. An organization such as Planned Parenthood may offer help with forms or applications for financial assistance in covering the costs of the exam or birth control pills. Do not be afraid to ask questions, as your information is kept confidential.

Step 4

Schedule an appointment for counseling and/or an exam. Some facilities require or offer optional free counseling.

Step 5

Contact the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to request information on how to obtain free health care or health services that cover your birth control pill expenses.

Step 6

Ask your doctor for guidance in finding free birth control pill resources. She may be able to provide you with a few months of free sample pills.
