Hemorrhoids are a common complaint during pregnancy. Hemorrhoids, also called piles, are swollen veins around the anus that cause pain, itching and burning. Sometimes the hemorrhoids protrude from the body, but they also may remain internal. Prevention of hemorrhoids is more difficult during pregnancy than when not pregnant because of the additional weight and pressure on the woman's body. Decreasing the chance of constipation is the biggest factor in preventing hemorrhoids. Increased exercise and proper hydration help prevent constipation. Several home treatments and medications ease the discomfort of the hemorrhoids and help the area heal.

Step 1

Avoid adding to the strain on the hemorrhoids. Lie down or get up and move around after long periods of sitting or standing.

Step 2

Sit in a warm bath or use a sitz bath for 20 minutes several times a day. A sitz bath helps avoid having to fill a whole tub of water and directs the warm water to the perineum. It also allows application of warm water to the hemorrhoids. Doctors do not recommend hot baths for pregnant women.

Step 3

Alternate the warm bath with ice packs on the area. Do not leave the ice pack in place for longer than 10 minutes at a time.

Step 4

Pat the hemorrhoids dry instead of wiping, which can be painful. Keep the area clean and dry. Use a hemorrhoid pad to cleanse the area. The medicated pads also help decrease the pain associated with hemorrhoids.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid using scented products, including toilet paper and moist wipes, on the hemorrhoids.
  • Watch for signs of bleeding. If bleeding occurs or there is no relief from the symptoms of the hemorrhoids, contact a doctor.

Things You'll Need

  • Sitz bath basin
  • Medicated hemorrhoid pads
