A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis or rhinosinusitis, occurs when the sinus cavities become swollen and inflamed. Sinus infections or related symptoms are often caused by sinus allergies, which inhibit the sinuses from draining and result in mucus buildup in the nasal passages. Sinus allergies can cause difficulty in breathing. Additionally, the eyes and the area around your eyes and nose may be swollen or you may experience headaches. Although there is no specific cure, some treatment options to cure an associated infection, relieve and help prevent the symptoms of sinus allergies do exist.
Step 1
Take an over-the-counter decongestant, such as Sudafed, to help unblock nasal passages and promote fluid drainage.
Step 2
Use an over-the-counter nasal spray, such as Nasonex or Flonase, to reduce inflammation and help clear nasal passages.
Step 3
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Motrin, Tylenol or Aleve, to alleviate any pain in the head or facial area.
Step 4
Use steam to promote drainage. Drape a towel over your head while inhaling steam from hot water in a bowl. Consider adding peppermint or eucalyptus oil to the water as a form of aromatherapy. Taking a hot shower can have similar results.
Step 5
Place warm compresses on your face to loosen mucus and help nasal passages drain. Place a clean towel in a large bowl of warm water. Squeeze out excess water and place the towel on your face. Let it sit until the towel cools. Repeat if desired.
Step 6
Perform nasal lavage, which is the process of draining the nasal passages. Use an over-the-counter product, such as Sinus Rinse, or a neti pot. Fluid is passed through the nasal passage by inserting a slender tube into each nostril. As the water drains out, it should dilute mucus and rinse out your passages or allow you to clear your passages by blowing your nose. Some products come with a saline solution, but plain warm water can be just as effective.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid environments or irritants that aggravate your sinus allergy symptoms. Drink ample fluids (at least 64 oz.), such as water or natural juice. Drinking fluids dilutes mucus and promotes drainage. Avoid caffeine or alcohol because they can cause dehydration and further restrict the nasal passages. The key to treating a sinus infection is maintaining moisture. Sleep with your head elevated to decrease congestion and increase the angle to promote drainage. Get plenty of rest to help your body recover and fight off infection.
- If your symptoms persist and don't seem to respond to treatment, let your doctor know immediately.
