Migraine sufferers agree that migraines are not simple headaches. They are devastating and painful, accompanied by a host of bothersome symptoms like nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. They can last anywhere from a few hours to days if not treated immediately. Depending on the strength of the migraine, over-the-counter methods using aspirin or ibuprofen may be sufficient. However, for most migraine sufferers prescription medications are needed. Triptans are among the most popular prescriptions for migraines. Name-brand triptans include Imitrex, Relpax and Zomig.
Effects of IIbuprofen
Ibuprofen is known as an anti-inflammatory drug used to relieve mild pain and inflammation. For mild migraine headaches, Advil, Mortrin or other name-brand drugs provide with other ingredients. Caffeine, acetaminophen and aspirin are examples of added ingredients, which make them more effective for headaches. Small doses of caffeine are thought to ease headache pain, while acetaminophen and aspirin work to inhibit pain sensations. These medications have mild effects on migraines and may not be suitable for complete relief, especially in severe migraines. These drugs are available over the counter but are not safe for continuous use, as ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding and other complications could result.
Effects of Triptans
Triptans are the most commonly used prescriptions for chronic migraine sufferers, according to the National Library of Medicine. They are available in various forms including pills, injections and nasal sprays. These medications work by reducing the inflammation of the brain vessels thought to cause migraine pain. They may also relieve the accompanying side effects like nausea, sensitivity to light and sound and vomiting and should be taken with the first signs of a migraine to provide the highest level of relief.
Effects of Narcotics
Pain medications are not frequently prescribed for migraine headaches, as they can be habit forming. However, some individuals, who do not find relief with over-the-counter medications and are unable to take triptans (due to cardiovascular conditions or other complications) may take pain medications for migraines occasionally. Narcotic medications for pain affect the migraine by interfering with pain signals in the brain, reducing the pain of migraines. Examples of name narcotics include Percocet, Oxycontin and Vicodin. Side effects like drowsiness, nausea, vomiting and constipation may result, as well as withdrawal when drug usage is reduced or discontinues, according to Steven Richeimer, MD, Chief, Division of Pain Medicine, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California.
