How to Measure an Insulin Dosage With a Syringe

Diabetes is a common disease that results in uncontrolled sugar levels in the blood. Both children and adults can suffer from this medical condition and treatment is necessary to prevent damage to the eyes and nerves. Insulin is one such treatment used to lower the sugar levels in the blood. This medication is not taken by mouth. Instead, it must be injected using a special tube and needle called a syringe. There are specific steps on how to measure an insulin dose with a syringe.

Step 1

Go to your doctor and discuss the insulin dosage necessary to bring your sugar levels to normal. Your doctor will write a prescription for your insulin.

Step 2

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water when you are ready to inject insulin. Dry them well.

Step 3

Remove the cap from the insulin bottle and wipe the top of the bottle with an alcohol pad.

Step 4

Pull back on the plunger of the syringe and draw air into it.

Step 5

Move the plunger so that the black increment on the syringe matches the insulin dose your doctor prescribed.

Step 6

Pick up the insulin bottle with your non-dominant hand and hold it upside down.

Step 7

Put the needle of the syringe into the insulin bottle and press the plunger to inject air into the bottle.

Step 8

Pull back on the plunger so that the black increment matches the insulin dose prescribed by your doctor.

Step 9

Check the syringe for any air bubbles. Use your dominant hand to tap the syringe so that the air bubbles disappear.

Step 10

Draw more insulin into the syringe to match the correct dosage if necessary.
