Adoption laws and the laws pertaining to adoption records can vary greatly from state to state, but there is still a general procedure you can follow to attempt to open sealed records. It's important to note that not all sealed adoption records can be opened and that despite your best efforts, you might end up empty-handed. Make sure you have a legitimate reason to request the adoption records be opened. A few examples include wanting to find out genetic health information, if a legal issue arises or if the biological father was never told about the adoption.
Step 1
Fill out the forms for your state to request a copy of the adoption records. If you have a compelling reason, your request is more likely to be granted. However, simply wanting to know who your birth parents are isn't reason enough to gain access.
Step 2
Submit your forms to the court clerk. At this time, you'll receive a court date to have a hearing.
Step 3
Go to court for your hearing. Bring all of your identification documents, including driver's license, state ID, birth certificate and Social Security card. This will help verify the legitimacy of your submitted forms.
Step 4
Wait for the judge to rule on your request. If granted, you'll be given access to the sealed adoption records at the appropriate adoption agency by means of a court order.
