Dark under-eye circles can appear on people of all ages and can be caused by lack of sleep, by a reaction to a chemical skin care product, by aging or by genetics. When the eyes appear dark, it can make you seem more tired and ill than you actually are. Luckily, there are ways to treat under-eye circles that will allow you to feel and look your best.

Applying Cold

Increased capillary size and puffiness usually contribute to the severity of dark circles under the eyes; when cold items, such as ice or a cold pack, are applied to the skin, they reduce inflammation and shrink the capillaries. By applying cold to your eye area, it allows your eyes to receive the same benefits as the rest of your skin. To apply ice to your eyes, wrap one ice cube in a thin cloth, then place the wrapped cube onto the bottom portion of your eye. Keep your eye closed, and leave the ice on it for at least two minutes. Repeat with your other eye.

Choosing an Eye Cream

It is important to select an eye cream that does not contain harsh chemical ingredients, which can irritate your eyes and can cause an allergic reaction on your skin. Irritation and allergic reactions exacerbate dark circles. Select an eye cream created with natural ingredients, such as beeswax, aloe vera, chamomile and olive oil.

Choosing Makeup

Sometimes commercial makeup can inflame and irritate the skin. Look at the ingredient list the next time you purchase under-eye concealer, powder or foundation. Many times, the list is full of strong chemicals that can cause irritation on the delicate skin under your eyes, making dark circles worse. Choose a natural makeup that contains gentle and soothing ingredients. Natural makeup can be purchased from a natural foods store or through an online merchant.

Avoid Harsh Soaps

Most commercial soaps tend to dry out your skin and contain artificial perfumes and dyes that are much too harsh to be used on the delicate skin around your eyes. Try to use a natural soap designed for sensitive skin types that does not contain artificial perfumes or dyes.

Alternative Supplements

Dark under-eye circles can sometimes be caused by a deficiency in vitamin K, one of the important fat-soluble vitamins that your body needs to be healthy. According to Washington University, studies have shown that applying vitamin K to the under-eye area decreases the severity of dark circles. Check with your doctor or naturopath to see if using vitamin K under the eyes is an option for you.
