1. 1-Hour Trail Ride
The most popular way to go horseback trailriding is to contact the local western trail ride society. These rides are usually 1 hour in length along a predetermined trail. These trails are very common in conservation areas or state parks. On the trail ride, you will go through a variety of scenery, including hills, water and flat ground. The trail ride is lead by an experienced rider in the front and one in the back. Prepare for your ride by wearing comfortable jeans, boots with a heel and a long sleeve shirt. The shirt protects your skin from the sun, dirt from the horse and the trail as well as brush along the trail itself.
2. 3-Day Trips
A popular option for honeymoons is the 3-day horseback riding trip. The entire trip is on horseback. Each rider carries their sleeping and camping gear, riding equipment and horse care equipment. These trips cover a lot of ground and allow the riders to experience much more of the trailriding experience. To prepare for this type of trail ride, take several shorter trail rides first. Wear appropriate clothes and invest in comfortable boots and chaps. Leather chaps are worn over jeans and protect the skin from chafing when riding a horse.
3. Group Trail Riding
Get together a group of friends and organize a trail riding experience. All Western riding barns organize trail rides. Provide them with the number of people, the number of children and adults, and the skill level of the riders and the length of the ride. Many horseback riding classes include a trail ride as part of the training. On a trail ride, you need to respond to new situations, control your horse and deal with surprises. It is a very different experience than the safety of riding in a fenced in ring.
4. Beach Side Trail Riding
When on vacation to a warm country, try horseback trailriding along the beach. There is a cost for each rider; the length of the ride and the distance is usually advertised. Wear pants and a full length top; otherwise, you risk serious damage if you fall off the horse. Without pants, the saddle will rub against your legs and make them sore. Wear clothes that are warmer than normal beach wear as the spray off the ocean is cold and the high salt in the air irritates the skin.
