What Is Depression & How Is it Treated?

It's normal to feel sad every once in a while. People who are depressed feel sad or irritable most of the time and struggle with other feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness.

Basics

Symptoms of depression include a depressed mood, weight gain or loss, issues sleeping, fatigue, loss of interest in pleasurable activities and thoughts of suicide.

Types

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, types of depression include major depression, dysthymic disorder, psychotic depression, postpartum depression and seasonal affective disorder.

Causes

Some contributing factors to depression include lack of social involvement and support, genetics, alcohol or drug abuse and environmental issues.

Treatment

Depression can be treated with individual therapy, group therapy, support groups, family therapy and medication.

Warning

Untreated depression can result in suicide. Signs of suicidal behavior include saying goodbye, references to death and suicide, recklessness and feelings of hopelessness.
