1. Read the Water
Reading the water is a key element of successful kayaking. If you can't read the water, you won't know where to go or how to get there. To read the water, view it as an entire entity. Look at how fast or slow the water moves and locate obstacles you'll need to negotiate, such as boulders or sandbars. Use this information to plan the route you want to kayak. You may not end up taking your course exactly as planned, but if you can read the water you'll make it through your trip.
2. Row, Row, Row Your Kayak
Practice proper rowing techniques to avoid injury. A dislocated shoulder is the most common injury among kayakers, and it's almost always the result of improper rowing. When rowing, move your shoulder with your hand. The easiest way to do this is to watch your hand as you paddle. You should feel as if your kayak is on top of the water when you use the proper technique. Practice in a calm river or a swimming pool so you can get the hang of it without having to worry about boulders or turns.
3. Pick Your Kayak
You can choose a kayak that's rigid with no give in it at all; these are typically constructed of fiberglass or plastic. Plastic is stronger and less expensive, but they're difficult to repair. Fiberglass kayaks are lightweight and easy to repair but cost more money. Inflatable kayaks are the least expensive option; they're also easiest to transport and simple to store. Finally, consider is length of a kayak before you buy: the shorter your kayak is, the easier it is to maneuver. The longer the kayak, the faster it will go.
4. Test the Waters
You can also rent a kayak from most boat rental locations. Renting is a great way to try different styles and sizes of kayak boats before you spend a fortune on a kayak you aren't happy with or won't use. You can find boat rentals at most docks, and nearly all of them should have kayaks in stock. Check with the staff to see if you need to meet any specific safety qualification. Some outfits will only rent kayaks to those who take and pass a kayak safety course, and can show a certificate of completion at the time of rental.
