Over-the-Counter Acne Scar Treatments

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when pores become blocked, usually by excess oil. It can also result in scarring when the resulting lesions rupture and don't heal properly. Several methods exist for treating acne scars that don't require a prescription.

Anti-Scar Medication

Creams such as Mederma are available over-the counter from pharmacies. They can reduce scarring from acne as well as other types of scarring such as injuries, surgery and stretch marks. Anti-scar medication is typically applied twice daily for two months to achieve the best results.

Silicone Sheets

Silicone sheets are commonly available in drug stores and pharmacies. They have an adhesive backing that allows them stick to the skin and may be cut to fit the scar. A silicon sheet can cover the scar for an extended period of time while it's healing to reduce the size of the scar.

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel is available at pharmacies and doesn't require a prescription. It's a solution of glycolic acid with other ingredients to provide the needed consistency. The concentration of glycolic acid in home chemical peels range from 10 to 20 percent. The user applies the chemical peel to the treatment area and peels it off after about 15 minutes.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice can also lighten scars caused by acne. It's usually diluted with water and applied to the scar with a washcloth. The washcloth should be removed after a few minutes. This treatment may be safely used several times per day.

Oils

A variety of oils are available from beauty supply stores that may reduce acne scarring. Vitamin E oil comes in capsules and is frequently used for this purpose. A capsule is broken open and the oil is applied to the scar. Other oils that may be used to lighten acne scars without a prescription include olive oil and rosehip seed.
