Statin drugs are commonly prescribed to treat high cholesterol. They are efficient in lowering your cholesterol, but they also carry the risk of certain side effects. Some of the more commonly reported side effects include muscle pain, liver damage and digestive problems.
Muscle Pain
One of the most frequently reported side effects of statin drugs is muscle pain. It may be a mild soreness, or more severe where it makes your daily activities difficult to complete. In rare cases these drugs may cause rhabdomyolysis, which is life threatening muscle damage. It is important to report any significant muscle pain to your practitioner.
Liver Damage
Over time, statin drugs may cause a rise in liver enzymes. If not monitored, liver damage may ensue. While on these medications it is important to have your liver functions tested frequently. Most practitioners recommend routine blood work every three months while using these drugs.
Digestive Problems
Some people may experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea while taking these medications. This is a rare side effect and may subside after your body has a chance to get used to the medication. If one suffers from digestive issues prior to initiating statin therapy, they are at an increased risk of experiencing these side effects.
