According to Helpguide.org, drug abuse occurs when someone uses alcohol or drugs in excessive amounts on a regular basis. You can abuse illegal drugs, prescription drugs and alcohol.

Signs and Symptoms

Signs of drug abuse include intense changes in mood and energy levels, confusion, weight gain or loss, excessive sleep, paranoia and delusions.

Drug abuse impacts the person occupationally and socially. For example, she could be demoted or lose her job, have trouble maintaining relationships and neglect her children.
